What is Maskne???
To give us adequate protection facemasks need to fit well across the nasal bridge and jawline, The close snug fit can create friction between the material and the skin causing irritation that can lead to skin breakouts on the lower parts of the face. If the skin is already prone to breakouts you will see an increase in activity.
The fabric from the mask will cause chaffing which will lead to water loss from the skin. While the warmth from the nose or mouth will increase bacteria. This will upset the microbiome of the skin enabling the skin’s to defend against increased bacteria on the skin surface. Initially the skin will feel rough, but very quickly the formation of black heads will appear.
If the skin behaviour is not interrupted with a good skincare routine further inflammation will occur, presenting itself as raised papules (spots) and raised lesions.
How can you help your skin?
Firstly you need to reduce friction of the mask and to achieve this purchase fabric masks made from silk and tencel. Apply a barrier cream to soothe the skin.
We like Medik8 Ultimate Recovery Intense to relieve tightness and dryness. It also prevents moisture loss deep within the skin, locking the moisture in to mimic the skin’s natural protective barrier.
A methodical cleansing routine is paramount
Always cleanse twice in the evening and do your routine when you get home. Leaving it till bedtime can mean cleansing routines can be cut short. The first cleanse will remove makeup and daily dirt.
The second cleanse will work deeper into the pore and break down further sebum build up. The cleanser should be left on the skin for a couple of minutes and always removed with a facial cloth.
If the skin is a repeat offender of block pores and inflammation, use a salicylic acid based product to reduce the inflammation and the secretion of sebum.
We like Medik8 Surface Radiance Cleanse to gently renew and purify. Always cleanse the skin every morning to remove the dead skin cells that are pushed upwards the skin surface. During periods of sleep the skin cells renew and push upwards. If cleansing is missed in the morning the removal of dead skins, sweat and excess sebum will be sealed by moisturiser-makeup-facemask.
To speed up recovery for damaged skin increase the hydration by using serums rich in hyaluronic acid and B vitamins. We like Medik8 Hydra B5 Intense.
Avoid using physical facial scrubs as they can cause further irritation and redness. Chemical exfoliators built into your daily cleanser or exfoliating pads will brighten and remove the dead skin cells that can accumulate. Light scratching of the surface of the skin from physical scrubs can give bacteria a great entry point and lead to aggravated skin.
We like Medik8 Blemish Control Pads to dissolve the oil and dirt from within the pores.
